Tree of Life
2025
This Tree of Life serves as a symbolic reflection on the cycles of destruction and regeneration inherent in both the natural world and our human experience. It is a testament to resilience, renewal, and the dreams for our community that we carry forward. Constructed with wood from Sterling Forest that was burned in the 2024 Jennings Creek Fire and newly sprouted branches from early spring from the same area, the sculpture embodies the dynamic processes of ecological recovery and transformation.
At its core, this piece integrates community engagement through fabric inscriptions bearing the dreams and aspirations of teen students participating in an art workshop series in partnership with Warwick Area Farmworker Organization and Wickham Works. These written contributions, embedded within and interwoven throughout the sculpture, emphasize the interconnectedness of human intention, creative expression, and our relationship to the environment.
The first step to building toward a goal is to imagine it. Viewers are called upon to consider their own relationship with nature, resilience, and renewal. How do we, as individuals and as a society, navigate the cycles of loss and growth inherent in our changing environment? What aspirations for our community might we weave into the evolving fabric of our collective future?
